My, My it has been a while! Alana-Leann is now 6 months old. Isabella-Ariel will be 2 years old April 22. Mark-Anthony is happily 5 and wants to stay a kid forever. Mark's heart is doing great! Thank you you "GOD". His blood pressure is still a little high but we are monitoring it. Mark loves school and enjoys Sunday school. He wants to play the drums. We'll see... My Bella "WOW" she is very precocious . She is learning words too fast and she is stubborn. It's her way, or tantrum time. (Welcome terrible twos). We try to put her best face forward. Then, my sweet little Lana-Lee. All she asks is to be feed on time. I could not have asked for a sweeter baby. People keep asking if I will give her away or sale her. And to them I say, back off or someone could get hurt. I (Joy) am enrolled in college. Continuing my pre-req's. The way I figure I'll be in school for six to ten years. There is no way I will take a full load, right now. And I'm ok with that. Thank you Grandfather Hogle for pushing me! Kai is laid flat on his back. On April 14 he will be getting surgery on his back. (Ruptured Disk Re pare). I'll let you know how that goes. This is my life and I have no complaints. We still find LOTS of good times! Me & Mark Alana

After much thought and consideration I have decided to keep this "BLOG". I will give small family updates though it will be more business oriented I have joined a company called"CELEBRATING HOME". Now my new Plan is to build this business. I really considered going back to work at "COSTCO", but I figured I would be working just to pay for child care. That's just not good enough for me and my family. My dreams of opening my own family day care has been post-poned. "CELEBRATING HOME" will help me accomplish all that I dream to do. So with an open mind, a bit of prayer, a hopeful and determined attitude I start a new journey.

New Home

Well, since I arrived home in January many things have happened. I came back to California to a new home, Instead of living with just my children I am now living with five different family members and two of their children. This however temporary, is quite an experience. Luck for me we live in a very large house, with very large rooms. I am currently one month and counting away from opening my small family day care and six months away from my large family day care. Finally I have the house in order, I just need to start setting up my day care room, filling electric outlets with child proof Shields and getting all my paper work in order. Then, I'll be in business. I'll post some Pictures of the kids next week. Right now thank God life is calm!

Well, "Happy Holidays" one and all! I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. Mark has been doing great! His last doctor's appointment, went wonderfully!Mark looks to be back to normal. My little Isabella, is a firecracker! She seems to be very... Intense. Right now she is crawling backwards. She growls at everyone and everything but, has the most Beautiful smile! Wow. Okay. So, it has definitely been awhile since I have updated this blog. My apologies!

Bella is getting so big she has to weigh around 14lbs. My arm's are definitely getting a work out. I LOVE DRESSING HER UP!! It's soo much fun! My Marky... Well we have some bad news, his lips are turning blue again. So back to UCLA we go. They have to run test and find out what the problem is. Say a prayer for his heart. Marky is just the sweetest little boy. He is my little love bug. There is nothing like cuddling up with your child! Ahh, sweet moments. Got to love and cherish 'em!

Well the forth has come and gone. I think it's wonderful to watch things, like this through my children's eyes. Mark was soo excited about everything. I still love to watch fireworks. (Probably not as much as him). But he just watch every minute of it. Every year we go to one of our local High schools for the forth of July. They host a little shin-dig for the community. Its located on the football field. They play music well everyone is arriving, then a live band plays for about an hour. After that, the fireworks go off and everyone goes home. We have gone every year Mark has been alive. I love going because it's still very much a family atmosphere.

Well, today Mark and Isabella had to get their Immunization shots (boohoo). Poor babies. Mark had to get FIVE! (Craziness). And Isabella had to get three. The good news is Marky will not need anymore till he is 11 years old. Bad news is Bella needs like a million more. ;)

(Well maybe not a million). More news on Mark he has been taken off Coumadin and put on Plavix. We could not get his INR numbers were they should be. I'm guessing the reason they put he on Coumadin to began with is, it has done well, in the studies done on it. There were so many things he could not eat. I'm glad there are not more restrictions. (I just have to say "Whew, that was a big hill to climb". But I'm soo happy I didn't do it alone. I know God was with us the whole time!)

Here is Bella & Joy's story. Don't worry I've edited it for you.

On Monday afternoon I started having contractions, this continued throughout the night. By Tuesday morning my contractions were about ten minutes apart. It stayed this way all day, I went for walks, took hot showers, cleaned house and drank lots of water. Then around 8:00pm I decide that it was time to go to the hospital. So we went. (Now you have to understand, at our hospital things are a little slow. Unless you're in active labor) So we get to the hospital, they check me when I arrive, I'm only dilated to 3 cen. Then I 'm sent to get an ultrasound so my fluid can be checked and measured. When the results came back my fluid was at four percent. ( Much too low) Then i was checked again and dilated to 4. So I was admitted about 11:30. As they walked me to the room I told my nurse " I need an epidural ASAP" I got to my labor and delivery room around 1:30. Got the IV put in. Received my my epidural about 2:00am, about that time I was dilated to 6 cementers. The doctor said if I was not dilated to 10 cementers by six a.m. To induce me and that is what happened. At 6:00am I was induced. Around 7:45am I was 10 cementers. But the nurse said don't push your doctor is in surgery, He'll be out in about 20 min's. So I waited their 20 minutes. Then told the nurse the doctor better get here now baby is coming. They started frantically preparing the room. The doctor got there gave a little pep talk then I started pushing. Three minutes later my Bella, Bella was born. The End

Well since we've been home from the Hospital Mark has seemingly been fine. As I write he has caught a cold. You know the cough and runny nose. I talk to his Doctor yesterday and he said if the cold gets worst, Mark doesn't get better or maintains a fever, to give him a call back. So, say a prayer for him. ( I hate colds). On a "me" note I am ready to deliver anytime!!! Really like like any second, any minute, any hour, any day, and with-in the next week! I'm ready! I hate the feeling of waiting and waiting. I'm only dilated to TWO so it could happen today or next week. I'm praying for today. Tomorrow is good too. We'll see.

Well last week on Tuesday Mark had to be re-admitted back into the UCLA hospital. Let me tell you the story. On Sunday & Monday I noticed Marky had a cough. You see we live in the desert and with the heat on I figured since it was a dry cough no problem. However on Tuesday His cough sounded like an I'm getting sick (kinda) cough. So i called his Doctor Cardiologist, explained the situation then ask at what point should we bring him in! He said bring Mark in today. So we did. When we reached UCLA we got Mark's Blood work done, then his X-ray. After all that we went to meet with the doctors. They found that Mark's right lung was 80% filled with fluid. In doctor talk this is called a "Plural Infusion". Opposed to pneumonia which is called "infiltration" on the lung. Also pneumonia is an infection. So Mark did not have pneumonia but he did have fluid in his lung. There was absolutely no symptoms of having that amount of fluid in the lung. Some of his symptoms should have been, difficult breathing, stomach pains due to the lung weighing down on it or drowsiness. Nada, nothing ( it's scary to think of the "what ifs"). On Wednesday Mark got a chest tub put in in order to drain all the fluid. So they drained a little more then "ONE LITTER" OF fluid! I was so dumb-founded when the told me this! HOW WAS THERE NO SYMPTOMS?!?! HOW! The bottom line is we stayed at the hospital from Tuesday - Saturday. They could not find the cause of the fluid so Mark is taking 7 different medications! It's almost a full time job just keeping up with everything. We now need to see the doctors every two weeks. As to catch or prevent any other complications that may arise.
Please don't ask how I'm going to do it. I have No idea! There is one week and four day till my due date. Well Mark was in the hospital I was having Braxion Hicks it really freaked the nurses out. So I had to be admitted for observation. But now, we're home trying to get everything ready for Baby Isabella. Thank you for listening to my rants. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR FAMILY. WE NEED IT RIGHT NOW!

Thank God Mark continues to do well! Every week for now, we still have to get his blood drawn. (Due to the Coumadin he is taking). He is getting better at sitting there not moving and allowing them to draw his blood. Poor baby, I hate that he has to get use to it. Also that it's just a part of life for him. The "ouchies" on the front of his body (chest and tummy) are getting better. So far so good!
On a different note I have two weeks and a few days before the baby is born. Mark is very excited to Meet Bella-Bella ( We are naming her Isabella-Ariel Soledad Hogle) Isabella; because I read a good story about Queen Isabella in World history & loved the name. Ariel; Kai chose this name, he wanted all his children to have a double name ( i.e. Mark Anthony). Soledad; This is my oma's (grandmother's) name and I love her so much, I just wanted to honor her in a small way.

Just Want To Say Thanks, To Everyone Out There

We are so happy to be out and free! We just want to say thank you for your prayers, happy thoughts and love. Mark had his check up yesterday (Friday The 20th) everything went great! The doctor is still adjusting the blood thinner meds. That means Mark will continue getting Blood draws every few days till the doc.'s are satisfied with it. The doctors said to keep Mark out of the public for two to three weeks. We are just really happy to be home!
I forgot to mention, when Mark-Anthony was in the hospital he tried to make the life hard for the nurses who cared for him. Sometimes when we would meet the nurse after the nurse change she would say, "so I hear Mark is a little terror" or "I heard Mark tried to make run for it" (Ok pause for a funny story... When we took Mark for a walk with the wagon, we took him to the fountains then to the other side of the building where there was grass. Well we were in the grass making him walk he tried, [well connected to a few machines] to run to car garage. This child weak in body, but strong in spirit tried to get home. So we put him back in the wagon, well he was pointing to the garage saying " I want to go home, please I'm all better!" All the way back to the room he was saying "I don't want to go back to the room, I'm all better, I'm all better!". ) That poor, poor nurse never knew what hit her. She felt so bad. I just had to share that story with you.

Man oh, man are we ready to go home! I 'm ready, Mark is ready everyone is ready! But Mark had to stay one more day for observation. It looks like we WILL go home tomorrow around eleven a.m., that is great news for all involved! The doctors' just wanted to be sure Mark heart rhythm is normal. (Well for him). Still no poop for Mark, but his oxygen is normal. So I hope to tell you we are home and resting on Tuesday night.

DAY SIX AT UCLA

Today was kinda slow, this morning Mark got his catheter removed. At noon the pace maker was also removed. So today we ran into two problems; problem one, Mark is allergic to Betadine. This was used to cleanse wounds on his neck and reduce the chance of infection. But what happened is, the neck turned red started burning and after 12 hrs. many, many blisters appeared on his neck. That is why in many of his pictures he has something blue or pink on his neck. The blue thing was a cooling gel and the pink thing absorb the moisture coming off the blisters. Big bummer! Problem two, after the surgery his blood oxygen level is supposed to be 93 or higher. (Before surgery it was low to mid 80's). Mark has had to stay on oxygen, because his level is 93 with the oxygen. And without lower. Mark had his last chest tub pulled out yesterday. So I'm guessing that is the problem with his lungs. Right now (9:30 Sunday night) the nurse still hears something in his left lung. We were hoping to go home Monday, but we may need to wait till Tuesday. All this evening we have been working with Mark trying to get him to take deep breaths, take longer walks, blow his whistle, sit up and talk or cry. We really want him to be ready to go home Monday. If we have to wait then we work with him all day trying to get his lung clear! And oxygen level up! Marky just relaxing

DAY FIVE AT THE HOSPITAL

Today was another hard day. After removing the bandage on his neck partially, Pus was found under the rest of the bandage. It too needed to come off. More blood needed to be drawn and the new port place on his left hand would not support the removal of blood. The last drainage tube needed to be removed. It was decided that this would all be done at once. What fun. Marky was given sedation, but showed no signs of being sedated. The bandage was ripped off, the drainage tube pulled out, and Markey was protesting strongly. Still no port for the vampires. They called for ok for more sedative and by this time veins are collapsed. Everyone is exhausted. They still need blood. What a morning. The drugs really kicked in and Markey was saying how good he felt. He asked the nurse with a smile are you going to give me a shot? (This is the same child that was screaming bloody murder 10 min earlier) He got to go outside and look at the fountain in the front of the building and walk on grass on the side of the building. When he went inside he wanted to go in the cafeteria and sit down to eat. He said that he was well and ready to go home NOW! We know that he is getting better and after he does his first elimination, it is all down hill.

MARK WAS AND (IS) MAD ABOUT BEING MADE TO WALK!

Today has been an action packed day!! Let me Tell you about it....Before 7am Mark said he was hungry. He drank and ate all of his fruit. They removed the left drainage tube, and said that Marky would walk today! This was an adventure. He had to be unhooked from many machines and set up on portables. Because of the tubes the drainage containers had to be carried. It took 3 people to carry assorted machines and help Markey walk down the hall and back. This was so awesome! When the doctor asked Markey how he was doing, he gave her the feel sorry for me look and said "My Heart"! It was great! She replied,'Your heart is getting stronger'. Markey didn't like that answer. He got back to the sitting chair and fell asleep. He was moved to the bed and given a seditive. He had the ports removed from his neck, and he ate lunch! He had soup, crackers, and chips. He was blowing bubbles and a whistle to help with his lung capacity. He had a port removed from his hand and a new one placed. He posed for pictures with his doctor and played with Batman. He will get up and walk later. What a busy day for a young one!

Day Three at the Hospital

Markey had an interesting night. He was a little more lusid and talkative. He recieved a chest x-ray and then vomited. He developed a little fever. In the morning, he was checked and they decided to remove one of the drainage tubes. They gave him an oral and intraveinous seditive and when it took effect, we went to work. We had to remove the dressing for all three openings and then observed the open wounds. There was no ozing or puss. They quickly removed the middle tube and closed the suture. New dressing was applied. This went remarkably well. He was then moved out of bed to a chair sitting up. This needed to happen for alot of reasons. The chest x-ray showed fluid on and around the lungs. they need this fluid to drain out of the body. With the absence of fluid, this could keep the fevers down and away. Once most of the fluids are gone they can remove the drainage tubes. A heart echo was done while he was sitting up. HE TOOK HIS FIRST BITES TODAY! He ate a bite of a strawberry and a piece of lettuce with Italian dressing. He drank some apple juice. They are giving him anti-nausea medicine to help. He still has to stimulate his tummy to start digesting foods again. They removed his rectal probe for temperature. Yuck! The dietician came and set up Markey's menu. He will be on a med called coumadin. This is to prevent blood clotting. His diet will be for 6 months in stead of 1 month. The diet is the heart healthy diet (Lowfat and limited Sodium). They are now splitting the last drainage tubes to see if they can pull another one out tomorrow.

The Day After

Well today Mark is doing well. Last night at around nine, he was able to drink a little water and have a cherry Popsicle. At 12:00am he had another one. (it might not seem wonderful to you but, normally it takes children a few days to start eating and drinking things). It was just amazing that he started doing this. At 3am Mark was still awake and he had an x-ray and expelled the last Popsicle orally. He developed a little fever and with the help of Tylenol it was disappeared completely. He took a nap at 4:30am to 6:30am and very carefully told his cardiologist "No, No Do not touch me". Later he was examined and was told that he was doing fine. He will get one of the chest tubes removed tomorrow, some of the hard wiring, and will be allowed to sit up in a chair. He is being allowed to eat if he would like, and he will be on a low-fat diet for a month following. Lets keep praying for a speedy recovery!

The Surgery Finally Happened

Our Marky just got out of surgery at UCLA Hospital. The Fontan procedure took about 2 1/2 hours, the surgeon said he did very well and there are no complications. He is in PICU and will remain there for about 2-3 days. They will be removing the breathing tube shortly, but there are still tubes in him and will have to remain in for a few days. We all are thankful that God is keeping his hand on our Marky and we would also like to thank you for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers. But remember he is still in PICU and can still get an infection, which could prolong our stay at the hospital. So your good thoughts and prayers are still needed for a quick recovery, so please keep us in your thoughts & prayers. For those of you who couldn't make it to the hospital, I am including a picture of Marky, but keep in mind, he just got out of surgery.....

Ok, it looks like the surgery is really going to happen this time. Mark is completely healthy and has no sickness right now! So on Monday March 9th we talk to the nurse, do pre-op. then get settled in. Then have surgery on Tuesday 10th of March. So say a prayer, wish us luck, knock on wood and lets hope it happens this time. I only have six weeks left of pregnancy so if does not happen this time, we'll have to wait awhile before it happens.

WELL SUGERY IS NOW ON MARCH 10th

As I sit here typing banging my head on something hard and stomping my feet, thinking why does Mark have to keep getting sick!!!! Mark and I (Joy) are sick again!! We have what doctors like to call "the stomach flu" it's awful!! Mark started to show symptoms on Tuesday, so when we went to the doctors (at UCLA) on Wednesday he had yucky poop and a fever of 101. So our nurse called the anisteologist to ask her thoughts on going on with surgery, she said it was not a good idea. Then the nurse called the the surgeon and asked the same, he said it was best to put it off. So here we are again, letting our bodies heal then waiting for the surgery to take place.MARK'S SURGERY WILL BE ON( if he does not contract any other illness) MARCH 10TH. So pray with us just that all goes well.

Well,l since the cold and flu season is under way and I can't keep mark in a plastic bubble, he got sick!! Ughhh! He has "Bronchitis". Granite it's almost gone and he is on antibiotics, he still caught an infection. And unless there is an immediate threat to your life you will not have surgery. So Marks Heart surgery has been postponed to "FEBRUARY 19." As you know Mark's surgery was suppost to be on Feb. 9th then it was changed to the 10th and now it's the 19th. At least it's for a really good reason.

WELL WE FOUND OUT THAT FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, MARKS SURGERY HAS BEEN CHANGED TO FEBRUARY 10th. SO WE GO FOR PRE-OP. ON THE 9th AND THE SURGERY THE DAY AFTER. KEEP US IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
THE DOCTOR ASSURED ME, MARK IS AS HEALTHY AS POSSIBLE AND THIS IS THE KIND OF CASE HE LIKES TO TAKE ON. MARKS CHANCES OF HAVING A SUCCESSFUL SURGERY ARE "98%"! OPPOSED TO 50%. I ALSO UNDERSTAND ANY TIME YOU GO INTO ANY SURGERY YOUR WALKING INTO A SNAKES DEN (AS DR. LEVI) PUT IT. BUT I AM CONFIDENT IN THE SURGEON DR.BRIAN REEMTSEN, FURTHER MORE THE STAFF AT UCLA IS SOME OF THE FINEST PEOPLE, AND ARE WORTHY OF ENTRUSTING THE CARE OR MY SON TO.

I was Searching the web, for a good explantion to put on the blog, and I found one. I want you to understand a little about Mark-Anthony's Heart. I know this is a lenthie explantion but here it is...
Tricuspid Atresia (TA) is an abnormality of the heart valve and right side of the heart that occurs to a baby’s heart before birth. The normal opening between the right atrium (upper chamber of the heart) and the right ventricle (lower chamber of the heart) is called the tricuspid valve. When the tricuspid valve does not form during a baby’s development before it is born, blood is unable to flow between the two chambers. With the absence of this blood flow, the right lower chamber does not develop into a normal size. Blood is then forced to travel from the right upper chamber into the left upper chamber through a hole called the patent foramen ovale (PFO) a normal opening between the right and left upper chamber in the baby’s heart before it is born. After birth this hole should close on its own, but does not in this defect since the blood flow keeps it open. This opening allows blood that has been oxygenated by the lungs (red blood) to mix with the unoxygenated blood (blue blood) from the right upper chamber. This mixing causes the blood to have a lower oxygen content overall. This mixed blood is pumped into the left lower chamber. If there is a hole (ventricular septal defect) between the right and left lower chambers, then the mixed blood will travel to the lungs, through the small right lower chamber and the main vessel to the lungs (the Pulmonary Artery) as well as to the body via the left lower chamber and the main blood vessel to the body (the Aorta). Once the baby is born, it has the normal need for oxygen and relies on the lungs to perform the normal exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen and to give the blood oxygen (red blood). Infants born with Tricuspid Atresia that do not have a hole between the two lower chambers have a small amount of blood flow to the lungs, provided by another small blood vessel called a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The PDA normally closes within a few hours up to a few days after the baby is born. This lack of red blood causes the baby to become slightly blue or cyanotic. The baby’s heart will beat faster to pump more blood to the lungs and the baby will begin to breathe faster trying to take in more air. The more work the heart and lungs do to increase the amount of red blood to the body, the more need there is for more red blood. This cycle will cause the baby’s body to release chemicals into the blood that will eventually cause the baby’s heart to stop beating. This could take as long as two weeks to happen if the heart defect is not found.
To fix the heart with this defect usually takes three operations, with the first one as soon as possible after the defect is discovered. If there is a hole between the two lower chambers (ventricular septal defect), but without any narrowing of the pulmonary artery, a small band is placed around the pulmonary artery as a temporary procedure. This temporary procedure prevents too much blood from flowing to the lungs. If there is not enough blood flow to the lungs then a shunt is created, the shunt connects the blood flow from the aorta to the pulmonary artery to supply the lungs with blood. The size of the shunt is based on the infant’s size. The second operation is the Glenn anastomosis and is done when the infant is between four and six months of age. The superior vena cava is sewn to the right pulmonary artery increasing the blue blood flow to the lungs. The shunt is removed at this time. The final operation is the Fontan Procedure. The inferior vena cava is sewn to the junction of the right pulmonary artery and superior vena cava. A special fabric tube (Gore-Tex) is used to create a separation between the inferior vena cava and the heart.
The tissue (atrial septum) between the two upper chambers (right and left atriums) is removed. The heart now has a single atrium and a single ventricle and the blood flow to the lungs bypasses the heart completely. Long-term outlook for the children will be the basis for this study. Most children have reasonably good exercise tolerance during their daily lives

I've decided to blog for this year. As some of you may know Mark-Anthony's Heart surgery is Feb. 10. I am also expecting a baby girl on April 17th. So there is alot going on. And as much as I would like to call every member of my Family and extended family and Friends, it's just not possible. So i will give updates, on Marky condition well in the hospital and after. Then soon after post pictures of of a sweet baby girl.
